Who we are

About Chhath Houston

A nonprofit community initiative dedicated to organizing and celebrating Chhath Puja in Houston, Texas, in collaboration with the Jagannath Hindu Temple of Rosenberg.

Our mission is to bring together families, volunteers and culture enthusiasts to preserve and promote the spiritual and cultural traditions of Bihar, Jharkhand, Nepal, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Bengal — and of everyone else who celebrates Chhath.

Chhath is a festival of water and daylight, which makes it hard to keep far from home. Working with the Jagannath Hindu Temple of Rosenberg (JHTR), we prepare the temple pond as a ghat so that vratis can stand in water and offer arghya properly, with volunteers handling setup, safety, prasad, food and parking so that families can focus on the vrat.

What is Chhath Puja?

Chhath Puja is an ancient festival dedicated to Surya, the Sun, and to Chhathi Maiya. Vratis keep a nirjala fast and offer arghya standing in water — first to the setting sun (Sandhya Arghya), then to the rising sun the next morning (Usha Arghya), after which the fast is broken. There is no priest and no idol: it is a practice of gratitude, discipline and care for nature.

Community

One community-wide ghat instead of a dozen scattered ones, so families celebrate together and new arrivals in Houston have somewhere to go.

Tradition

Kharna, Sandhya Arghya and Usha Arghya kept as they are back home, and passed down to children growing up here.

Inclusivity

Open to all community members — from Bihar, Jharkhand, Nepal, UP, Chhattisgarh, MP, Odisha, Bengal, and anyone who wants to celebrate with us.
